St. Martin of Tours is the patron saint of Soldiers, conscientious objectors, horses, the poor, and South Africa. A Roman Soldier, he is most famously depicted as sitting on a horse and cutting his cloak in half to give to a poor beggar. St. Martin was born to pagan parents in the early 4th century in what is now Hungary.

His father was a tribune, which is a high-ranking officer in the Imperial Horse Guard. Martin and his family went with his father when he was assigned to a post at Ticinum, in Northern Italy.
