Jung had learned about Freud's techniques and in 1906 he wrote a letter to the famous psychoanalyst to ask for advice about a challenging case involving a young Russian woman. The rest, as they say, is history. A mere footnote in the Standard Edition of Freud’s works, Sabina Spielrein first emerged from oblivion as an historical person with the publication by W. McGuire of the epochal correspondence between Freud and Jung in 1974. By some, Spielrein is said to have anticipated Freud’s death drive. Others, however, believe that she in fact inspired Freud’s own conception of the death drive.

She was a pioneer of child psychology, an early advocate of female sexual health, and originated the so-called “death wish” a full decade before Sigmund Freud expanded on her idea. Her theory of mythic archetypes was published in an article one year before Jung’s work on the same subject in 1912.
